 8336: Sim Suite Medical Emergencies and BLS (including Crisis Resources Management) for the Dental Team

The aim of the course is to provide an introduction to Crisis Resource Management and Human Factors in Dental Medical Emergencies as well as an introduction to understanding human behaviours in a crisis.

This will include an overview of how the following can affect patient outcome (from both a negative and a positive standpoint): Situational Awareness, Communication, Leadership, Team Working, and Assertiveness etc.

The course uses a blend of both theoretical learning through presentations and discussions along with practical scenarios and simulations to ensure an interactive course is delivered in a fun and memorable way. Handouts and videos covering the course content are also available post course.This is the base course that any patient facing staff should attend on an annual basis (as defined by the Quality Standards for CPR in Dentistry from the RCUK & GDC and the Skills for Health Mandatory Training Framework).  This course can be attended by anyone from the dental practice, clinical or non-clinical.  Ideally, staff would have done this level of training before, but this is not essential.

Learning objectives:

The course aims to fulfil the following objectives:

  • Revision of the Theory of Resuscitation and improving survival from medical emergencies and cardiac arrest
  • Revision and Practice in assessing the collapsed casualty
  • Revision and Practice of the Recovery position
  • Revision and Practice of Adult cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR 30:2)
  • Revision and Practice in using basic emergency oxygen equipment including pocket mask and Bag-Valve-Mask
  • Revision and Practice of use of an AED in resuscitation
  • Discussion on CPR with paediatric modifications (CPR 30:2) with option to practice
  • Practical Scenarios on the management of medical emergencies. These scenarios can include asthma, anaphylaxis,acute coronary syndromes,fits/seizures, hypoglaecamia,choking
